Michael Zavros Prince Zavros 2011, Charcoal on Paper
This drawing is fantastic. Michael Zavros does most of his drawings in charcoal and by doing so, it really expresses his style. By using charcoal, black and grey are really the only colors used. Value and shading are very important in drawings like this. Texture is shown greatly in this picture, in the ground, in the horse, in the rider, and even in the background. I like how the man contrasts with the horse he is riding. It really allows for both, especially the horse, to stand out from the mostly grayish background. The objects “flow”, or blend, very well with one another and are very realistic. Most of the detail is expressed in the horse and rider. This is why they were the focal point for me. When I first looked at this picture, my eyes immediately went to the them because there is nothing really in the background.. just smoke, dust, or clouds. My favorite part of this picture was that the horse was not in the very center of the picture. By it being towards the right, it really allows for it to look like the horse is running. I also really like how the horse’s lower legs and feet are kind of blurred to make it look like it is moving. This drawing is amazing to me and I still get the same impression from it now.
